The legends of man's origins are shrouded in the mists of time. There are many such legends, but this one has a special meaning and significance. Relayed as a personal trust to me, by Thambu, an African sangoma and healer (sometimes referred to as a witchdoctor) who holds knowledge passed down from ancient ancestors through generations, by word of mouth. Confirmed from time to time, by contact with the ancestral spirits - in order to keep the legend pure and uncontaminated by contemporary beliefs and norms. The story text we captured is primitive and sketchy, yet it has an incredible depth and clarity for those who can visualise and mentally transport themselves into that time. There is also a strange familiarity...

"At the time of the earliest memory of man, before the time of writing or even clearly spoken words, the creator of all things put His hand on Africa. A group of human forms foraged lazily in the warm early afternoon sun. Their naked, sun-bronzed bodies blended into the browns, gold's and greens of the winter scenery of the vast valley which was their home territory. Like many other mammal herds, they consisted of males and females of all ages, led by a dominant male. Only own family members made up the group (occasionally stolen or adopted members of another group would be tolerated if they were still infants). They ate mainly herbs and plants and animal flesh that was possible to catch for each individual member, as they all fed themselves and were not responsible for one another.

On this lazy winter afternoon a great roaring sound never before heard (and never to be heard again), started in the north-east, growing slowly and steadily louder, louder to a pitch that struck terror into every living creature. A new brightness appeared from the direction of the sound and grew brighter as the sound increased. The sun in the north-west was eclipsed by this new brightness until it was no longer visible. Then the earth shook, shivered and vibrated for a long while. The new brightness and the sound stopped suddenly and everything went dark as dust and smoke filled the whole sky. Nobody is certain what followed the weeks of darkness, because fright and terror reigned in the valley. The enormous dark object, as big as the mountains, that now lay in the valley caused most of the animals to flee.

After this time many strange things started to happen and many things changed. Entire groups of our forefathers vanished. Some were seen again later, much changed. They started building shelters and covering their bodies with leaves and animal skins. They communicated with more and more complicated sounds and gestures. They stared using fire on a regular basis. Co-operation between groups spread these new skills and ideas. The use of tools and weapons and large, organised hunting parties meant that more and larger game was brought in for the feeding of all. Most importantly our forefathers became AWARE of themselves and of each other. A sense of kinship developed. This grew into close family groups with strong ties. This is how our human society was born."

To this day, this place holds unexplained powers. The chosen are shown the way of these forces, to be used for improvement, growth and healing, also to communicate with guides from beyond this life. This phenomenon is reputed to have occurred in the Southern part of the Great Rift Valley of Africa. One of the only marks scarring the face of the earth that can be seen from the moon. At the fork of this great valley is the Cradle of Mankind. Here lies the key to a time-nexus, the key to the understanding of our origins.

According to this legend, this was the time when the Creator returned to earth and breathed intelligent life into a chosen creation. This is where man became different from animals, where he started his quest to find the path back to his creator. It has been a long and difficult path and we have come a long way. Some of us believe that we are now ready to receive the knowledge that we have been seeking, for more than a million years! The momentum of the quest for this knowledge is nearing critical mass ! Modern man-made religions, will dispute this legend in favour of their own versions. As no real proof exists either way, especially when going back more then a million years, one legend is as plausible as the next. What we sense, deep inside our own consciousness, will determine whether we are ready to receive a more profound degree of knowledge. Whether we dare to risk the responsibility of knowing our destiny, remains the question. The fact is that this part of Africa is now widely accepted as the sauce of earliest human history. This area where the legend has its origins, is of special significance to us all. Especially now, as a global sense of spiritual reawakening is taking place. Our individual roots, the cause and purpose of our very existence, cries out to be discovered and acknowledged. As we establish our existence in the new millennium, more and more people around the world, are yearning to discover their own selves and the meaning and purpose of their being.
