Tourmaline

Named in the 18th century (1759 - derived from Sintalese turamali -stone attracting ash, referring to mixed-colour gems of unknown identity). Variable in colour, ranging from black, blue, green, pink to red, orange, and multicoloured, and even colourless. Making a striking gem when transparent and cut. Bi-coloured green rim with pink centre and vice versa. Most popular varieties are the more common greens as well as Rubellite the pink-to reds and Indicolite, the blue. Excavations and written descriptions show that tourmaline, because of its diversity of colour, was very popular as a precious stone in ancient times (see also: Colour Significance).

It seems to have a different colour or shade of colour, when viewed from different directions and was known under many different names. Interestingly, tourmaline maintains its specific properties through all its colour range, as well as those relating to that particular colour. Valued as a "teller stone" in ancient Eastern Indian culture, it provided insight during times of struggle. It also "told" who and/or what was the cause of the trouble. Used by shaman among the African, Native American Indian and Aboriginal tribes. Thought to bring healing powers to the user and provide protection from danger.

Used to regulate hormones and metabolism and throat problems. It is thought to be good for the lymphatic and digestive systems and in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, neuritis, sciatica and anaemia. It is of benefit in the treatment of bladder problems, loss of blood pressure, epilepsy and general pain and ulcers. Blue is used in treating the thyroid. It protects the vocal cords and is a blood cleanser. It assists in the improvement of the sense of taste (see also: How they Work).

Can stimulate concentration and co-operation between opposing forces and has been used to encourage self-confidence and reduce fear and nervousness by promoting understanding. It assists you to look at the challenging or difficult situation and find within it the benefit and teaching that you require. It is tranquil and calming and symbolises balance. Also used to enhance the memory -- a wonderful energy to work with. "Eradicates weeds and established seeds". Helps recovery from "heartache" and helps lighten you up.

Promotes male balance and physical healing (green = males). Pink promotes female balance and protection. Black or green tourmaline is said to aid the nervous system as well as remove negative vibrations. Black will also protect against spells by energising you against the negative force which is directed against you. Blue tourmaline is used in treating stammering and releasing blocked emotions, enhancing skills associated with psychic awareness and with communication. Tourmaline is used to enhance cheerfulness and friendship and assisting with meditation and inspiration and watermelon/pink tourmaline enhances knowledge of self. Green around the pink core is often considered as the super energiser of the heart chakra, connecting it to the higher self.

As with Sugilite, a warning is in order, tourmaline acts quickly -- so be prepared for the speed of reaction, possibly coupled with feelings of strong emotion, as trapped energy is released.

It is the (modern) birthstone for October and symbolises hope. Its dream significance is an accident. The adaptive energy range can be successfully used on all chakras -- it acts to clear and service the energy system of the body as a whole.
