Jasper (Red)

(14th century) A form of opaque, usually patterned, chalcedony found in massive formations, often stained by impurities and occurs in various colours such as red, green, yellow and blue. The popular [red] variety is a fine-grained quartz variation, coloured by inclusions of haematite. Colours may be arranged in bands of red or a mottled mixture of many different patterns and colours. (see also: Colour Significance). This hard and durable gemstone was cherished for its beauty and mystical properties from ancient times.

The jasper mentioned in the Bible, as one of the stones in the breastplate of the ancient high priest and in the wall of the New Jerusalem, is believed to have been a dark green, opalescent stone. Because of its physical properties, engravers of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt carved this stone into exquisite cameos, intaglios and scarabs, the Native American Indians also considered it a sacred stone.

It has been known to assist in the treatment of biliousness and disorders of the bile duct, pancreas and stomach, as well as in cases of gastric fever and gall stones. Also used to bring relief to those suffering from indigestion. Used in the treatment of tissue deterioration of the internal organs and for disorders of the bladder, kidneys, liver and spleen, and to steady the pulse, as well as treating blood disease. It has been used in assisting in the treatment of epilepsy. Can be used to treat the loss of the sense of smell and is thought to soothe the nerves.

It is known to rejuvenate cells and is also used for strength during pregnancy. A piece of jasper held in the hand during childbirth guards the mother and her child. Also worn to relieve pain, especially during childbirth. It is also used for the general health of the spine. Used to calm a troubled mind and assist in treating problems of the nervous system, beads of red jasper were worn around a sick person's neck so that the disease could pass through them and dissipate.

Believed to bring good health as well as courage and wisdom in undertakings involving risk. Jasper containing a yellow colour was used to assist and protect during times of travel (spiritual and physical), and that containing the red colour was thought to induce health and rebirth, bringing fresh ideas to the holder, while that containing the blue colour was used to connect one with the "after" worlds. (see also: How they Work).

Astrological connections - Aries, Scorpio and Virgo. The (ancient) birthstone for March. Its dream significance is love returned. It is used for the Base chakra.
